With Strings Attached
Jonathan Kellerman

For thirty-five years, bestselling author and accomplished musician Jonathan Kellerman has been, as he puts it in his Introduction to this lavishly illustrated, endlessly fascinating volume, "chasing fabulous sound." The result of that quest is a world-class collection of guitars, mandolins, and other stringed instruments that number more than 120 . . . and counting.

Kellerman takes us on a fascinating guided tour through his collection, complete with rich personal histories of his favorite instruments and of the brilliant, often eccentric craftsmen and musicians who brought them to life. It is a record of one man’s lifelong love affair with the guitar . . . and it is much, much more.

Whether writing about household names such as Fender, Gibson, Martin, and Dobro or about marques revered by aficionados–D’Angelico, Hauser, Stromberg, and Torres–Kellerman brings to bear the same sure storytelling instincts and keen attention to detail that characterize his bestselling fiction, making each entry a sparkling mini-essay as much to be savored as the sensual photographs that follow.

Your fingers won’t be walking through With Strings Attached. They’ll be strumming. Picking. Stroking.

And dancing.

Editor's Note

NY Times best selling author Jonathan Kellerman has turned his attention to what is truly his passion - collecting guitars! If you may recall, his fantastic collection was featured in an issue of Vintage Guitar magazine. We also caught a very brief glimpse during a CBS Sunday Morning interview. To be released in November 2008, his coffee table edition will hopefully be printed on a suitable absorbent material to minimize drool stains! With only a handful of other large and historically significant collections documented with limited release editions e.g. Scott Chinery, Akira Tsumura, Steve Howe, etc. Jonathan Kellerman's, "With Strings Attached" gives us another source of envy and evenings of getting lost in a book.....well at least the pictures!

My wife has been of fan of his literary works since early on and maintains email communication with him from time to time. Being the wife of someone afflicted with G.A.S. she readily understood why Alex Delaware's girlfriend Robin is a luthier! Jonathan is a site visitor, GOT G.A.S.? t-shirt owner and of course, has a very serious case of G.A.S.!

He gave us his permission to promote, "With Strings Attached", on the G.A.S. site as there is no better audience! He also communicated that not only does he also own a National Style 97 Surfer Girl (
Monthly G.A.S. Attack August 2008) but it is prominently featured in his book. I can't wait!!!!

The man who wrote the book on G.A.S.! Jay's whimsical look at the affliction using contributions from guitarists worldwide helps to confirm that you are not alone. A must read for anyone who  suffers from the affliction, you can purchase directly from Jay's website, select music stores or watch for his eBay auctions. Once you take Jay's GASP (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome Potential) self diagnosis quiz you'll have taken the first step by acknowledging that you are truly one of the afflicted!

The boys from South Plainfield! Been together since 8th grade and still going strong in their early '20s. They took 5th place in the 2007 NJ Battle of the Bands held at the Starland Ballroom in Sayerville, NJ. I've recorded them both in my home studio and live in fact you'll hear a few of the tracks on their MySpace page. They are currently in a NYC studio finishing up a 3 song demo. Talented bunch - give 'em a listen!

My newly rediscovered childhood friend who also still suffers from G.A.S. 30 years later! Check out his remastered tunes with his rock band "Cyclops" from the 1970s and some current stuff from his home studio. Jimmy has launched a cool site for the remastered tracks of Cyclops original album and now available on various online music download services.

One of the fastest growing guitar companies in north american and for good reason! Remember the Airline brand name from the catalog giant, Montgomery Ward? Great reissues of the guitars that the baby boomers started out with in the early '60s! They even introduced an Airline lap steel model. Very cool! I became a contributor for the MyRareGuitars monthly newsletter as of April 2008.

Rob has a serious case of Gibson AAS (Amp Acquisition Syndrome)! It was so bad he started a Gibson amp discussion forum. He handled the restoration and recover of his prized GA-70 Country Western (seen above). If you want to share your Gibson amps with like minded folks, stop by his site and join a discussion group!

Eric's comprehensive site dedicated to Grimshaw, who manufactured guitars in the UK from 1930-1980, is well worth a visit. They manufactured everything from archtops to solidbodies and lap steel guitars. Also, they distributed the Premiervox brand bakelite lap steel with parts obtained from Rickenbacher including the prewar 1.5" horse shoe pickup. Fascinating stuff and Eric certainly has a serious case of G.A.S.!

What exactly is that behind the wheel? The Reverb King of course! Jim emailed and questioned my opening #s. Only 10 to have a serious case of G.A.S. he asked? Not per Jim...somewhere between 20-30 or when the wife brings up that ugly word. Being a smart guy Jim switched to vintage amps! Very talented fella so be sure to give his site a peek.

Walt has a very serious case of National and Martin G.A.S. He controlled his disease for almost 30 years but a digeridoo caused a relapse and the rest is history. Be sure to check out Walt's fine music and his guitar collection. The man can play the blues!

Paul Green had the vision to develop an exciting program aimed at grooming our next rock stars.  We attended a School of Rock All Stars show with Jon Anderson from YES and was blown away by the talent of these kids ages 8-17.  My 11 year old son is now a drummer for the Monmouth County School of Rock performing in the infamous venues of Asbury Park, NJ.  I can't even tell you the thrill watching my son rock out on the same stages were Bon Jovi, Springsteen, Southside Johnny and a host of others got their start!
